Self-talk is the ongoing internal narration running through your mind, the sentences you say to yourself about your abilities, your circumstances, and what is likely to happen next. It happens so constantly that most people barely notice it, yet it shapes far more than it seems to at first glance.

Where Self-Talk Comes From

Much of your self-talk was absorbed early in life from parents, teachers, and other influential figures, then reinforced over years through repetition until it became automatic. Some of it reflects genuine lessons learned, while other parts are simply old habits of language that never got questioned.

How Self-Talk Influences Outcomes

The words you use internally affect the emotions you feel, which in turn influence how you act. Telling yourself this is hopeless before attempting something difficult tends to lower effort and persistence, while telling yourself this is hard but workable tends to keep you engaged and problem-solving.

Why Awareness Comes Before Change

You cannot adjust a pattern you cannot see, which is why the first skill in this course is simply learning to notice your self-talk as it happens, without judging it yet. Awareness alone, practiced consistently, starts to loosen the grip of habitual and unhelpful phrases.

Action Step

Today, carry a small notebook or use your phone to jot down three exact phrases you say to yourself internally, capturing the words as precisely as you can remember them.
