Internal Self-Awareness
Internal self-awareness means having an accurate sense of your own emotional patterns, values, and triggers — knowing what genuinely matters to you, what reliably sets off strong reactions, and what your habitual responses tend to be across different kinds of situations you regularly encounter.
External Self-Awareness
External self-awareness means understanding how your behavior actually lands with other people, which often differs meaningfully from how you intend it to land. Someone can have strong internal self-awareness while remaining genuinely unaware of how their tone or habits are experienced by those around them.
Why Both Are Necessary
Strong internal awareness without external awareness can lead to confidently misjudging your own impact, while strong external awareness without internal awareness can lead to constantly adjusting to others’ perceptions without a clear sense of your own values. Developing both together gives a more complete, accurate picture. Most people naturally lean toward developing one type more than the other, which is worth noticing as you work through this course.
